Perhaps it all starts with a love affair between an American girl and a Veronese boy, when Ceil arrives in Verona in 1988 and meets Erminio, he a building contractor, she a writer and translator from Italian to English: two jobs far removed from the agricultural world. They were married in 1990, and 18 years ago, discovering other elective af nities, they purchased a hectare of land on the Torricelle di Verona, which at the time was completely abandoned and had some centuries-old olive trees, but to be cleared, terraced, and rearranged with new plantings.
